For this home nestled on a hillside overlooking Town Lake and the Austin skyline, we turned constraints into opportunities. What was a once barren, rocky, and eroded hillside is now a multi-level extension of the home. Windows are now doors opening onto views of the city, lake, surrounding landscape, and pool underfoot. In careful response to the existing architecture, we designed a spa, a cantilevered middle deck that arcs over a deep swimming pool, accessed by a curved floating staircase. New structures meld seamlessly into the existing stone coursing and finishes.
By design, all lines in the staircase and middle and bottom decks originate from the center point of the spa rotunda by design. An oculus in the middle deck aligns with the State Capitol beyond and connects sonically and visually with the water in a surprise grotto below. Fruit trees and edible plants pepper the property. The plantings celebrate each season with flavors, colors, scents, and forage for wildlife. Sculptures of a gorilla, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, spitting tortoise, alligator, and other creatures punctuate an otherwise casual promenade through the property.
